Veteran of Great War Was in His 48th
Year Funeral service was be held in the Joe C. Wray and Bro. Chapel, Mountain street, at 4 p.m. today, for Sergeant John (Jack) Shirley, a veteran of the last war, who died at Ste. Anne's Military Hospital on Wednesday in his 48th year. Sgt. Shirley was an origainal of the 14th Battallion R.M.R. with which unit he served in France, subsequently being transferred to the staff of No. 1 Canadian General Hospital, and was invalided to England and Canada in 1919 Born in England he came to this country in 1908 and spent the greater part of his business career in the insurance field and had last been associated with the General Accident Assurance Corporation from 1931 to 1936. His parents pre-deceased him in 1941: he is survived by one brother Corporal Arthur Shirley, Canadian Army Overseas, and three sisters, Mrs. Harold B. Hoare. Mrs. William Weatherhead and Mrs. Thomas Lawrence all of this city. A lifelong friend of the late Sgt. Shirley, Rev. Canon Frederick Whitley, will conduct the funeral service today and interment will be in Mount Royal Cemetery |
