RMR Goes Hunting
Westmount, Quebec – 16 December 2023: Over the weekend of 03 – 05 November 2023, the RMR sent a section of troops to Valcartier led by Sergeant Tom De Lutis to participate in joint training with the Royal Canadian Hussars and the Sherbrooke Hussars. The aim of the RMR was to play the role of the hunter, exercising their anti-armour tactics, weapons, and equipment.
The CAF uses a range of anti-tank weapons, which may include shoulder-fired anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and other anti-tank rockets. Examples of such systems in CAF service include the Carl-Gustaf M3 recoilless rifle (shown in the photo above) and the ERYX anti-tank guided missile.
Effective tank hunting begins with reconnaissance and target acquisition. Typically highly mobile to avoid detection and engagement by enemy tanks. The tank-hunting teams use terrain to their advantage and employ hit-and-run tactics to minimize exposure to return fire.
Cross-training with other arms like the Armoured units provides valuable experience for both parties, and the RMR troops involved in the training were fortunate to have the opportunity. Tank-hunting teams train for ambush tactics, which involve setting up concealed positions and waiting for enemy vehicles to come within range. Once in position, anti-tank teams can engage the vehicles with precision weapons, aiming to hit vulnerable points like the sides or rear.
