Wheaton Family Honoured By RMR NCO’s

Westmount, Quebec – 22 November 2025: On Sunday 09 November 2025, several members of the Wheaton family paid a special visit to the RMR Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ mess, reconnecting with a place that played a central role in their father’s regimental life.

The late Chief Warrant Officer (retired) Robert “Bob” Wheaton, CD, served twice as Regimental Sergeant-Major of The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR), from 1964–1968 and again from 1979–1981, and remained an active member of Branch 14 long after his time as RSM. For his children, the mess was more than just a room in the armoury; it was a familiar backdrop to their childhood, filled with voices, stories, and the easy camaraderie of senior NCOs.

To mark the occasion, the RMR Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ mess presented the Wheaton’s with a small memento of their visit, offered on behalf of all the NCOs who have followed in the footsteps of RSM Wheaton. The exchange quickly turned into an informal round of “mess stories,” as today’s Sergeants compared notes with the family about what mess life was like in RSM Wheaton’s day.

There were fond recollections of his presence in the mess and anecdotes about growing up around the Regiment, mixed with plenty of laughter at how some traditions have changed while others remain stubbornly the same. For the NCOs, it was a chance to be reminded that the role of RSM extends far beyond drill and discipline; it also shapes families and leaves a lasting imprint on the regimental community.

The visit closed on a warm note, with the Wheaton’s thanking the mess members for keeping the memory of their father alive, and the mess reaffirming that former RSMs – and their families – will always have a place at the RMR.
