Westmount to Honour RMR Soldiers with Lamp-Post Banners
Westmount, Quebec – 21 September 2025: This fall, Westmount’s streets will bear a striking reminder of the city’s enduring bond with The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR). The City of Westmount has approved a joint initiative with the RMR Foundation to install 10 memorial banners on lamp-posts during the Remembrance period (October–November).
Each double-sided banner will feature the name, photograph, and story of sacrifice of an RMR soldier, alongside the crests of both Westmount and the Regiment, a poppy of remembrance, and a QR code linking to a bilingual webpage with further details.
The project, titled “Westmount Remembers,” comes at a meaningful moment: 2025 marks the centennial of the RMR Armoury, built on Ste-Catherine Street thanks to Westmount’s extraordinary generosity. In 1920, the 58th Westmount Rifles relinquished their place in the order of battle so the RMR could continue after the First World War, and the city then leased the land for the Armoury at a symbolic rate of $1 per year. The Armoury, dedicated in 1925 to the Regiment’s 1,192 fallen of WWI, has since stood as both a vital home and a living memorial.
The banners extend that legacy of remembrance into the very heart of the community. Similar programs across Canada—from Brampton to Parry Sound—have proven to be powerful symbols of civic memory. Westmount’s participation will not only honour the soldiers of the RMR but also reaffirm the city’s unique role in preserving their sacrifice.
As the banners rise above Westmount’s streets this fall, they will serve as a poignant reminder of the Regiment’s deep ties to the community, from the days of the 58th Westmount Rifles to today’s serving soldiers.
Lest We Forget.
