Westmount, Quebec – 21 October 2025: This October, the soldiers of The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR) once again put their fieldcraft to the test during Exercise XERUS DÉBUTANT, held at CFB Valcartier from 17–19 October 2025. Among the highlights were the reconnaissance (recce) patrols, a demanding and essential component of infantry training that hones the soldier’s ability to move, observe, and report under realistic field conditions.

Under the direction of experienced leaders, RMR recce patrols navigated rugged terrain, conducted observation tasks, and rehearsed stealth movement techniques by day and night. These patrols are more than just practice—they are the foundation of the infantry’s battlefield awareness. Through them, soldiers refine vital skills such as navigation, communication, concealment, and teamwork, all while operating in uncertain and often austere environments.

Patrolling remains one of the core disciplines of infantry life. It builds confidence, sharpens leadership, and reinforces the principles of initiative and discipline that define a professional soldier. Whether identifying enemy positions, guiding a platoon through complex terrain, or conducting liaison with other units, every infantryman must master the art of moving unseen and understanding what lies beyond the next ridge.

For many members of the Regiment, the lessons learned in Valcartier will serve them well in future training and operations, where the ability to read the ground and think ahead can make all the difference.
