From the RMR Museum to the Old Brewery Mission: A Day of Service

Westmount, Quebec – 01 March 2026: On 17 February 2026, the RMR Museum welcomed a group of 17 students and three adult monitors from Neath Talbot College in Wales, U.K. The students, all enrolled in public service programs, are currently travelling through Quebec and Ontario on a sixteen-day educational tour focused on understanding how public service works in a Canadian context.
Their itinerary is built around more than sightseeing. The group is taking in local culture while deliberately seeking out hands-on learning opportunities tied to public, civil, and emergency services. For many of the students, the visit to the RMR Museum offered a meaningful chance to connect classroom discussions about service, leadership, and civic responsibility to a real-world example of a regiment with deep roots in Montreal and a continuing role in Canada’s defence community.
During their visit, the students toured the museum’s exhibits and heard about the Regiment’s history and ongoing relevance. Beyond the artifacts and displays, the tour helped frame the human side of military service: the demands placed on citizen-soldiers, the importance of training and readiness, and the way the Army fits into a broader ecosystem of public service in Canada.
What made the day especially fitting is what came next. After departing the RMR, the group headed directly to the Old Brewery Mission to volunteer for a shift serving meals to people experiencing homelessness. In a single day, they experienced two complementary dimensions of service: the preservation and education of military heritage, and direct community support for those most in need. It is hard to imagine a more practical reflection of what “public service” can look like, in both uniformed and civilian settings. The Old Brewery Mission has long been supported financially by Branch 14 (RMR Association) as part of their ongoing poppy campaign donations program, with an emphasis on ending homelessness among Canadian military veterans.
Many thanks to Canada Company’s Je Me Souviens team for their help in supporting and delivering the tour, and to our visitors from Neath Talbot College for including the RMR Museum in their Canadian learning journey.
