RMR Member in the Winter Olympics

Canadian hockey team, 1936 winter Olympics.

Westmount, Quebec – As we nurse our sorrows about both of the Canadian Olympic hockey teams losing in overtime, we remember RMR’s Second-Lieutenant Kenneth P. Farmer, who was part of that very team 90 years ago. Farmer was part of the Canadian delegation at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where – just like this year – the Canadian Olympic hockey team earned the silver medal! The Canadians would not win gold in hockey again until 1948, when the RCAF Ottawa Flyers represented Canada. The Rum Ration Podcast has an episode on that series if you want to learn more.

Born in Westmount, he graduated from McGill University and joined The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR) shortly thereafter.  Farmer was an outstanding hockey player, earning 10 goals and 4 assists, finishing with the second-highest point total of the tournament.

During the Second World War, he served with the RMR and then was transferred to the Manitoba Dragoons when the 32 Recce Regiment (RMR) was disbanded. He was discharged with the rank of Major and was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1945.
