Branch 14 (RMR Association) Hosts Citizenship Ceremony
Westmount, Quebec – 24 April 2024: Branch 14 (RMR Association) of the Royal Canadian Legion was honored to host a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony on 23 April 2024. This event took place at the regiment’s armoury, located at 4625 Ste-Catherine Street West, Westmount, Quebec. The ceremony occurred on the parade square and began at 11h00 sharp. The RMR Museum was open for tours before and after the ceremony and there was a long queue to enter, as the new Canadians were quite curious to learn more about the sacrifices made by soldiers like those of the RMR in making Canada what it is today.
As a symbol of commitment to inclusivity and community engagement, the ceremony was open to the public and welcomed 54 new citizens into the Canadian family, embodying the values of unity, diversity, and strength that Canada stands for. The RMR Association was proud to facilitate this important milestone in the lives of new Canadians and to celebrate the enriching diversity they bring to our nation.
During the ceremony, which was ably MC’d by Comrade Isabelle Goral, the participants:
- took the Oath of Citizenship
- received their citizenship certificate
- signed the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship form
- sang the national anthem, O Canada
A citizenship judge, Marie Senécal-Tremblay, presided over the ceremony and led the Oath of Citizenship. The ceremony official said the oath in English and in French. As a group, participants repeated the words to the oath in at least one of the official languages, and were encouraged to say them in both.
Once participants had taken the Oath of Citizenship, they became Canadian citizens. They were given their citizenship certificate as proof that they were Canadian citizens, and warmly welcomed by the dignitaries.
Speeches of welcome were given by Terry Young, Knowledge Keeper, Anna Gainey, Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce – Westmount, and Christina Smith, Mayor of Westmount. The ceremony was a memorable occasion, not only for the new citizens but for the entire community, as they came together to welcome their newest members. The RMR Association was proud to be able to share this special day with all who attended.
