Westmount, Quebec – 25 November 2023: The Royal Montreal Regiment Foundation is pleased to report than Chantal Clabrough, the Westmount High School educator who has been producing educational content for the Je Me Souviens history program since it’s inception, has received the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching History.

Specifically recognized for her project titled Honoring WWII Heroes: Westmount High School Memorial Project“. For a decade, Chantal Clabrough guided grade ten students through the Westmount High School Memorial Project, a poignant endeavour to honour alumni who served and perished during WWII.

Since 2014, this initiative remembered the school’s fallen soldiers in a deeply personal way. Students delved into historical research, piecing together stories from yearbooks, archives, and digital resources. Under Clabrough’s guidance, each student honoured an individual soldier, resurrecting their lives and connecting them to Canada’s wartime history. You can watch Chantal being interviewed about the project here.

The culmination was more than soldier biographies; it was a tribute to war’s lasting impact on individuals and communities. Through reflection assignments, students contemplated these soldiers’ legacies and their impact on families and society.

Completing the project during Westmount High School’s 150th anniversary underscored its significance within Canadian heritage. Clabrough’s dedication bridged the gap between past and present, empowering students to live history, honour sacrifice, and preserve memory.

The RMR is proud to call Chantal a friend of the Regiment and we salute her for her dedication to keeping the flame of Remembrance alive.

Lest We Forget.
