Lieutenant Sebaaly Promoted to Lieutenant

Westmount, Quebec – 09 October 2025: The Royal Montreal Regiment congratulates Lieutenant Samuel Sebaaly on his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, presented by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Langlois, yesterday on the armoury parade square in front of the memorial plaque. This significant milestone reflects years of hard work, perseverance, and leadership development within the Canadian infantry — a journey that transforms young officers into confident platoon commanders.
The road to earning a commission begins with the Basic Military Officer Qualification (BMOQ), followed by the demanding Infantry Officer Course, where candidates learn leadership under pressure, field tactics, and the art of command. Upon joining their regiment as Second Lieutenants, they gain practical experience under the mentorship of senior NCOs and officers, learning to lead by example in garrison and in the field. Most significantly, both physically and mentally, is passing the infamous ‘Phase 3’ Dismounted Platoon Commanders course in Gagetown, New Brunswick.
Promotion to Lieutenant marks a pivotal step in that journey — upon graduation of Phase 3 will come the moment an officer transitions from student to independent leader. In an infantry battalion, a Lieutenant typically commands a platoon of about 30 soldiers, responsible for their training, discipline, and welfare. The Lieutenants plan and conduct tactical exercises, issue orders, manage operations, and ensure their soldiers are prepared for missions both at home and abroad.
The responsibilities are immense, but so too are the rewards. Lieutenants form the crucial link between the soldiers they lead and the chain of command above them, embodying the professionalism, initiative, and resilience that define the Canadian Armed Forces.
Lieutenant Sebaaly’s promotion is a testament to his dedication, competence, and leadership — qualities that strengthen the Regiment and uphold its proud tradition of service. The Royal Montreal Regiment congratulates him on this well-earned achievement and looks forward to his continued contributions as a leader of soldiers.
