The Regiment Grows: Marking Milestones Beyond the Uniform

Westmount, Quebec – 12 April 2026: There are few milestones in a soldier’s life as meaningful as those that extend beyond the parade square. In recent weeks, the Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess quietly marked such moments, reviving a tradition that speaks to the strength of the regimental family within The Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR).

Three baby blankets were presented to members of the Senior NCO cadre in recognition of growing families. Sergeant Jon Giraldo and Sergeant Daniel Pavlenko were each honoured following the recent births of their children, while Sergeant Alexey Oleshko received a blanket in a long-overdue presentation marking an earlier chapter in his family’s story.

Sergeant Giraldo and his partner welcomed Cedrik Isaac in May 2026. Sergeant Pavlenko’s daughter, Mila, was born in September 2025. Sergeant Oleshko’s son, Daniel, was born in October 2017, with the presentation serving as a meaningful catch-up and reminder that no milestone is forgotten within the RMR.

This gesture is more than a simple gift. It is part of a tradition established by former Regimental Sergeant Major Robbin McIntyre, who introduced the blankets as a rite of passage for Senior NCOs. The practice reflects the Regiment’s enduring belief that service is not confined to the individual, but shared with families who support, endure, and grow alongside those in uniform.

The reintroduction of this tradition also serves another purpose: to encourage participation and connection among the Regiment’s younger Senior NCOs. In an institution built on continuity, such customs bridge generations, linking today’s leaders with those who came before them.

Moments like these, though quiet, reinforce the bonds that define the RMR. They remind us that while we train and serve together, we also celebrate life’s milestones together.
